Have you ever thought about kicking out the smoking habit? You are not alone. According to a study, seven out of ten smokers say that they want to quit smoking.
Quitting smoking cigarettes is one of the best things you can do to yourself. Smoking doesn’t harm only your lungs but also other organs in your body which includes the heart as well.
One-third of the deaths occurred due to heart diseases are the result of cigarette smoking and the smoke which is second-hand (smoke inhaled involuntarily from tobacco being smoked by others).
You might have been advised to switch to e-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) to quit smoking traditional cigarettes. Is smoking e-cigarettes which are also known as vaping any better than using tobacco products? Do you think that vaping helps you to quit smoking once and for all?
Here are a few facts about vaping by Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease.
#1 Compared to traditional smoking, vaping is less harmful
Vape heat nicotine (which are extracted from the tobacco), fruit flavors and other chemicals to turn into a water vapor that you inhale.
Normal tobacco cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals in which many are toxic. While details about the chemicals present in a vape liquid are still scarce, Blaha says, “there’s almost no doubt that they expose you to fewer toxic chemicals than traditional cigarettes.”
#2 Vaping isn’t any safer than smoking cigarettes
Nicotine is a primary agent in both regular, as well as, electronic cigarettes. The two are highly addictive and leads to craving aside from suffering withdrawal symptoms.
Moreover, it causes the blood pressure to rise and increases your heart rate which leads to heart attack.
#3 Addictions is a common factor in both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes
Because of the nicotine factor, both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes are as addictive as heroin and cocaine, but that’s not even the worst part.
Many vapers (those using e-cigarettes) end up consuming more nicotine than there is in a tobacco product as extra strength cartridges that has higher concentration of nicotine are easily available in stores.
#4 Vaping isn’t the best option to quit smoking
While vaping is promoted as an alternative to smoking regular cigarettes, it isn’t approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for being a cessation device.
One of the recent studies shows that a lot of people, who intend to use vape to quit smoking ended up smoking both, traditional cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes.
#5 Youth is getting hooked on Nicotine
E-cigarettes are more popular among youth than traditional smoking of any tobacco product. U.S. surgeon general reported in 2015, that there is an increase by 900 percent among high school students using e-cigarettes. Surprisingly, 40 percent of these youngsters have never smoked traditional tobacco product.
According to Blaha, three major reasons e-cigarettes are attracting young people are as follows:
- Teens believe vaping is less harmful than traditional smoking.
- Cheaper in price compared to traditional smoking
- Vaping offers flavoring such as watermelon and apple pie which appeals to younger users.
“What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would’ve never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit, it’s one thing if you convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It’s quite another thing to start up nicotine use with vaping. And, it often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road.” Blaha added.
