Beginners’ Guide to Vaping for the First Time

Today we’re going to be taking a look at how to use your new vaping kit for the first time. This article is aimed at those who are starting on their vaping journey, so as always we’ll do our best to keep things simple.

When you get your kit for the first time it’s a good idea to check that everything is there that should be. We always recommend taking a look at the manual and giving it a quick read through if you’re using it for the first time. It’s very tempting to get it set up and start vaping straight away, but some details do trip some people up.

But the good news is, for the most part, they’re fairly simple in the way that they fit together and work. Once you’ve checked that everything is where it’s probably a good idea to go ahead and put your battery on charge. Most devices will have an LED light that will show you when it is fully charged.

You can actually check the manual to find out what lights correspond to what. If your device has an LED screen and you plug it in you’ll be able to see a battery bar fill up until it is fully charged.

If you’ve gone for a pod or Cig-a-like style kit and the battery’s fully charged, you can actually go ahead and slip those pods on, or if you have that Cig-a-like system you can go ahead and screw it on, and just start vaping.

If however, you’ve gone for a kit with a refillable tank it’s probably a good idea to start filling your tank now. Now the device is open I’m going to go ahead and check the coil to make sure it’s nice and tight. So quick twist there to the right, make sure there’s no give.

Once that’s done I can go ahead and start filling the tank. So I’m going to go ahead and start filling this slowly, I want to make sure that I don’t overfill. Most devices will have a max line that you can fill up to. Filling over this line will actually cause a bit of an overflow and just get juice everywhere.

If you have a device that actually top fills and has a chimney, you want to make sure you don’t get any juice down this chimney as it will cause of gurgling and spitting, and it’s just not meant to be there. Once it’s all filled up I can go ahead and actually put it back together.

From here I’m going to go ahead and leave it for about 10 to 15 minutes. This gives the device long enough time for the liquid to soak into the coil and avoid something called a ‘dry hit’.A dry hit actually happens when there isn’t enough liquid in the cotton and it will burn some of the wickings if you try to vape it.

These taste awful, ok, really bad, so giving it a bit of time to soak through and you can avoid anything like that. If you have something like a Von Erl or closed pod system, or like the Cig-a-like, you can just go ahead and just inhale as is. There are no buttons to press, you just use it. Inhale, like so.

Simple as. If you have a device that requires a button to be pressed in order to vape, it’s usually the biggest one, and there are other devices that have a few more buttons on them, but again the fire button is the biggest one on the device. The next thing to do is to turn your device on. Most vaping devices require five quick clicks, like so; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

There you go, all turned on. Some devices use three but, mainly it is five. If you’re ever in doubt though, do check your manual. So you have your device and you’re just about ready to start vaping, but now the question is what power do I have it on? What I like to do with this particular kit is I like to go down to the lowest wattage possible.

From there I will increase it by a few watts each time and give a quick little vape until I find that sweet spot or a spot that I’m quite comfortable with. I don’t want to go too high on the power because it might lead to damaging the coil or giving what’s called a ‘burnt hit’ or ‘dry hit’ that we mentioned earlier.

So we want to find the comfortable point and then stick with that. Because vaping thinks doesn’t burn away like a cigarette, you might find your device is just glued to your face and you start vaping a lot more. This has its own drawbacks, you might find that you start getting nicotine headaches because you’re just using it too much.

So general rule of thumb is that if you’ve needed 5 minutes in the past for a cigarette, you might need about 10 minutes of vaping just to get the same satisfaction. If you feel you’re vaping a bit too much,

leave about 10 to 20 seconds between each puff, and ask yourself “Would I go for a cigarette right now, if I didn’t have this?” And if you would, go ahead and vape a little bit more, and if not, just put it down for now.

When you’re more used to the way vaping feels, you can start taking longer or harder pulls if you wish. If you have a device that has a few more settings, you can start off on low power and work your way up to a setting that feels satisfying for you.

Lastly, and it does sound kind of silly, but we should mention how you inhale on your device. So we mentioned before about the Cig-a-like style devices. They’re similar to a cigarette because they have a ‘mouth-to-lung’ style vaping, in that you inhale into your mouth and then it goes into your lungs.

If you have a more powerful device or sub own device, they have a slightly different style of inhaling. This one’s called ‘direct-to-lung vaping’. Quite simply, it’s just like breathing in.

You hold the fire button down, and because it has an increased airflow, you just inhale naturally. And that’s all there is to it. You should now be able to unbox your kit, charge your battery, and fill your tank without any issues.

So, in this guide, we saw how to charge up your device, switch it on, fill up and get it ready to vape in no time.
