While vaping has been touted as a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, scientists have debunked this theory, based on the damage it causes to the lungs. They have reached this conclusion in their recently published findings in the New England Journal of Medicine.
If the finding revealed in the new study are anything to go by, the connection between THC-containing vape products and some lung diseases is quite obvious. The scientist didn’t confirm that the compound is the only reason for all vaping-related illnesses since they are still investigating other products, substances, and devices.
For those unaware, THC is a psychoactive compound found in marijuana, as well as some lung diseases. Tissue samples from sufferers who were hospitalized citing a mysterious illness showed traces of vape juice (e-juice) that contained marijuana or cannabis oils. Regrettably, doctors failed to save two of these patients as their lung damage wasn’t remedial.
The findings indicate that scientists found damages caused to the lungs, resembling exposure to harmful substances such as toxic gases. Much to the chagrin of the researchers, the chemical injury caused due to vaping is something never been detected before in tobacco or marijuana smokers. There’s more to this than meets the eye.
While it shows chemical substances in select products causing ill-effects to the body, it is worth mentioning here that the results do not apply to all cases of the reported outbreak that involves over 1000 people getting ill. Moreover, the research shows that lipid buildup, which is created by inhaling oils in vape products, may not be the culprit behind vaping-related illnesses.
Nevertheless, the study doesn’t debunk the theory that inhaling chemicals and other substances in vape juice could lead to irreparable lung damage. The scientists were able to find out that the lung damage has been caused after inhaling one or more toxic substances.
The findings are likely to pave the way for further research about this mysterious illness; however, the scientists have clarified that the main cause of the illness is still unknown. Amid the ongoing investigation, several states have implemented a ban on the sale of vape products in an attempt to stop this illness from spreading.
